National Honor Society

Membership in NHS is one of the highest honors that can be awarded to a high school student. The standards for selection are in four areas: scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.800 overall throughout high school, must be a rising junior or rising senior, and must have been an SHS student for at least one full semester to be eligible to apply. Once inducted, students are expected to attend all club meetings—missing more than 2 meetings may result in disciplinary action by the faculty council—participate in the group service project once per semester, have at least 40 service hours per year, maintain a 3.800 GPA and display the highest moral character as a student and as an individual. Dues are $20 and are required a month after induction.

Volunteer at the Huntsville Botanical Gardens
  • Dinosaur Uproar exhibit guides, weekends Sat. 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM; Sun. 1:00 -3:00 PM
    • Monitor one of the five Dinosaur sculpture areas, and provide facts and information to our visitors about this amazing exhibit.


  • Butterfly Education and Awareness Day, Sat., June 20, 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM
    •  Five stations/tents set up in the Children’s Garden – Monarch Mammas, Hungry Caterpillar, Crysalis Palace, Juice Bar and Feeding Tent.


  • Butterfly Release Events, Sat., June 10 and July 159:45-11:45 AM; and 12:15-2:15 PM


  • Firefly Night Hikes, Tuesday, 6:30-9:30 PM, June 13, June 26, July 11, and July 25
    • Walk a 2-mile hike with the group keeping everyone together.  Prepare fire pits for s’more’s and clean-up.


  • Family Movie Night, The Good Dinosaur, Friday, June 2, 6:00-10:00 PM, Amphitheater
    • Assist with check-in and sell concessions


  • Family Campout in the Garden, Friday, June 2, 4:00-9:00 PM
    • Set-up and prepare hot dog dinner, clean-up, hayride to and from movie, build and tend fire in fire pits.
